Just a short note about Video CDs for those who don’t know what they are. Well, VideoCDs or VCDs are regular CD-Rs with MPEG-1 Video data. They can be written using most CD-writers. I use Nero BurningROM (http://www.ahead.de) to write them. VCDs written in the proper format are playable on most new DVD players that can handle CDR media. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it ? VCDs have been around in my part of the world for several years (I bought my first VideoCD in 1994). The format has never gained acceptance in US due to the popularity of DVDs, nonetheless, its a great format for sharing video data.

Lately, Super VideoCD that have MPEG-2 video streams have been making inroads into the VideoCD scene. SVCD is a standard format, playable on many DVD players. It renders great quality, does not suffer from block noise and motion artifacts. It stores anywhere between 30-60 minutes of video on a CD-R. SVCD is the future, it’s the way to go (until DVD-R becomes mainstream) !
